Observability and Monitoring - Getting Started

What are the the differences between observability and monitoring? How can your organization begin monitoring workloads utilizing open source tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, and Jaeger? What are the benefits of those tools when getting started and some of the challenges when organizations begin to scale out their operations?

Once we’ve answered those questions we’ll discuss how automation becomes critical on the path to observability and the tremendous value managed monitoring solutions, such as Instana, can offer. As we discuss the benefits of using a managed solution we’ll cover some of the benefits of having such a huge library of supported technologies, predefined alerts, machine learning, and our recommendation engine which will identify poorly configured or mismanaged services.

Kevin Crawley is a Developer Evangelist at Instana, an APM and container monitoring service provider and speaks globally on topics including distributed computing, microservices, containers, monitoring, logging, deployment automation, observability, public speaking, alert fatigue and human ops. He is passionate about sharing the stories of success and failures as a technical leader for various efforts over the course of his career.

Kevin is also Docker Captain and has successfully implemented Docker at multiple organizations over the past 4 years. He's currently the organizer for the Docker Nashville meetup group, and lead organizer for Nashville's DevOpsDays.
